Why I Believe In The Holy Spirit
2014-06-29 AM - Sermon by J.D. Conley

I'm going to preach on this subject this morning and thought it would be helpful to provide you with the main points ahead of time. There are more reasons we should believe in the third Person of the Godhead, but here are eight. I believe in the Holy Spirit because:

1. He Is A Person - In Jn.16:13, seven personal masculine pronouns are applied to the Holy Spirit. As a person, He possesses the characteristics of a person. He speaks, testifies, thinks, has affections, can be grieved, etc. My sermon will include more details regarding this point.

2. He Is The Provider Of Faith - The Holy Spirit inspired the words of Rom. 10:17 which states, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

3. Because Of The Existence Of The Scriptures - The Bible is, in and of itself, a product of the Holy Spirit, (cf. 1Cor. 2:10-11, 2 Pet.1:21). If He didn't exist, the Bible would not exist.

4. Because Of The Testimony Of Matthew And Luke- Both recorded that Jesus would be conceived and born of a virgin, and did so by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. If their account is false, then Jesus cannot be the Son of God and we are lost in our sins.

5. Because Of The Testimony Of Jesus- He spoke of the Holy Spirit's work numerous times. Jesus, being God, cannot lie, (Titus 1:2, Heb.6:18). The Lord's testimony of the Holy Spirit is reason alone, to believe in Him and have membership in His church, (cf. Lk.24:47-49, Acts 2:1-4).

6. Because Of The Intimation Of The Father - A close reading of Jn. 16:13, reveals that the Holy Spirit is the Revealer of Scripture, not the Originator. If the Holy Spirit does "not speak of himself" rather, "whatsoever he shall hear," Who does He hear it, [heard it] from? God the Father.

7. Because Of The Fruit He’s Borne In My Life - Where did the fruit of the Spirit (cf. Gal. 5:22-23), have its derivation? In me? Hardly! But, if the fruit of the Spirit is manifest in my life, its the Holy Spirit that has made it possible.

8. Because To Reject Him Is Tantamount To Rejecting Everybody And Everything! Without Him, there are no grounds for the existence of the Father, the Son, the Scriptures, or even faith itself! "We are of all men, most miserable!"
