Abortion - My Turn

No subject appears to inflame our society more than the subject of abortion. There abortion protests everywhere. In addition, we see signs against abortion reading, "Baby Killers" and signs for abortion reading, "Keep your morality off my body."

America is at war with itself over many things, but abortion is a major battle within that war. To lose the battle on morality will eventually destroy the nation (Prov. 14:34). With the Roe v. Wade ruling by the Supreme Court, some 40 years (January 22, 1973), our citizenry has "legal right" to abort a child. This ruling has created a feisty division between those called "Pro-Choice"—abortion is a woman's right because she is free to do what she wants with her body. This is done without regard of what God teaches. Opponents are called "Pro-Life"—who consider abortion as murder or killing of an unborn, innocent child. The Bible calls it sin.

The Fetus. The definition of the fetus involves both legal and medical meanings. Is the fetus a person or is it merely fleshly tissue that later becomes a person? Legally, the Supreme Court ruling failed to recognize an unborn fetus as a human being; consequently, the fetus had no any -legal protection. Medically, the fetus from conception has its own genetic code (DNA) making it distinct from the mother. Dr. Bernard Nathanson states: "A fetus is a person. It listens, it hears, it behaves like us. It is not a tadpole swimming around in the womb." Dr. Nathanson was an obstetrician/gynecologist at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. He further stated: "men today can know that abortion is unethical in the light of what we have come to know." We conclude from Dr. Nathanson that the unborn child is not a potential human being, but a human being with potential!

Biblically. The question of abortion, as all moral and religious questions, must be answered by the highest authority among men. The highest authority is not the Supreme Court, medical science, the individual (all of these can err), but what had God said in His divine revelation, the Bible (cf. Acts 5:29)7

All life is created by God. "Know you not that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us" (Ps. 100:3, ESV). Paul speaks of the origin of all things as: "The God who made the world and everything in it" (Acts 17:24, ESV).

When does life begin? If the fetus is not life at conception, but becomes life at birth, then it follows there is no moral wrong in abortion. Job said: "Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, 'A man is conceived'" (Job 2:2-3, ESV). "Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb" (Isa. 44:24, ESV). "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" (Jer. 1:5, ESV). God pronounced judgment on Ammonites "because they have ripped up the women with child" (Amos 1:3). "You do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the woman with child" (Eccl. 11:5, ESV).

Why abortions? Pro-Choice offers many reasons to support abortion; however, abortion, most often, is for the selfish, self-interest of the woman. When the self-interest of an individual is placed above the sanctity of life (something woefully absent in our society); i.e. abortion for personal convenience, a form of birth control, career plans, money, etc., God's Word is violated.

It is odd that in our society doctors to try to save the life of a premature baby and in the same hospital, on the same day or another day, doctors abort a fetus for the selfish interests of the individual involved. Pro-Choice decries the selective abortion of girl babies in China, but defends and demands abortion of both male/female babies in America. Why? Because women have been given the "legal right" by the Supreme Court.

There is a deeper problem with the issue of abortion—morality. It is said that better than 70% of all who have abortions are unwed mothers. It appears there is the moral problem with sexual promiscuity among both men and women. We are commanded, "You shall not commit adultery" (Rom. 13:9) and to "Flee fornication" (1 Cor. 6:18). God help us!
