Heart disease is a killer from whichever point of view, physical or spiritual. Physically, we do all we can to make certain our heart works properly. Why? In order to have a better and longer life. We know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. So we watch our diets, blood pressure, both cholesterol levels, pulse, etc. You cannot outlast your physical heart.

Our article deals with the more serious of the two heart diseases—spiritual. Just as there are things that relate to a strong physical heart, so the Christian's spiritual heart requires proper maintenance for a better spiritual life here and certainly an eternal spiritual life in heaven. Our spiritual heart involves our emotions, intellect, conscience, will, mind, etc. You cannot outlast your spiritual heart. We must keep our spiritual heart healthy by proper spiritual maintenance (cf. 2 Peter 3:18). A weak spiritual heart leads to death (1 Timothy 5:6).

Traits of an unspiritual heart. Our guide book—the Bible—lists many traits of a wicked (unspiritual) heart. Consider:
A wicked heart is perverted. "[W]ith perverted heart [he] devises evil, continually sowing discord" (Proverbs 6:14, ESV).
A wicked heart devises wicked plans. "[A] heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil" (Proverbs 6:18, ESV).
A wicked heart is deceitful. "Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy" (Proverbs 12:20, ESV).
A wicked heart finds fault with God. "When a man's folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD" (Proverbs 19:3, ESV).
A wicked heart rejoices when others stumble. "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles" (Proverbs 24:17, ESV).
A wicked heart trusts in self. "Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered" (Proverbs 28:26, ESV).

Traits of the spiritual heart. To have a good life here and a life spent in eternity, consider:
A spiritual heart obeys God. "My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments " (Proverbs 3:1, ESV).
A spiritual heart trusts in God. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, ESV).
A spiritual heart is happy. "A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed" (Proverbs 15:13, ESV).
A spiritual heart applies the Word. "Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge" (Proverbs 23:12, ESV).
A spiritual heart studies the Word. "The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things" (Proverbs 15:28, ESV).
A spiritual heart is not inclined to sin. "Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths" (Proverbs 7:25, ESV).
A spiritual heart does not envy sinners. "Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day" (Proverbs 23:17, ESV).

A careful reading of the Bible reveals the importance of man's heart (spiritual). It is by carefully taking care of our spiritual heart that we maintain a pleasing relationship with our God. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matthew 22:37, ESV). When we fail to properly caring for our heart, then spiritual heart disease sets and in can lead to eternal destruction if we do not take the proper steps to control its eroding effect. In other words, sin is terrible (Isaiah 59:1-2). You cannot outlast your heart.
