Why Our Gospel Meeting Was Great

The proclamation of God's Word is always great and beneficial, (Isaiah 55:11; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:18). We had a great meeting last week for numerous reasons, but consider these...

Great Preaching. The preaching was great because we were privileged to sit at the feet of a seasoned preacher and erudite student of the Word. Brother Varner's sixty years in the pulpit and in the study, was evident to all who heard him expound on the Holy Scriptures. As a result, the Word of God was proclaimed in a powerful and effective way. Brother Varner made us think and ponder about our temporal life and our eternal soul. When a preacher can cause his hearers to see the futility of seeking the material, and the vital need to seek the eternal, he has met his task. Our brother accomplished that each time he preached.

Great Singing. It is often said singing will make or break a gospel meeting. The singing during this meeting was great. We had three capable and experienced song leaders during the course of the meeting, brothers Morris, Shepherd and Wells. The songs were led with vigor and the lyrics were sung with heartfelt conviction by the church. Jesus was indeed in our midst when we lifted our voice in joyful song to God, (Hebrews 2:12).

Great Attendance. How encouraging it was to have many visitors at the meeting. We were especially blessed during this meeting with lots of visitors. Visitors are always welcomed and appreciated. But how wonderful it was to have so many of our members present each night as well. The congregation as a whole supported the meeting in a commendable way, and many were in attendance at every service. With many members and visitors present it made for a great meeting indeed!

Great Edification. With great preaching, singing and attendance, a great degree of edification is inevitable. The prayers that were offered up were well thought out and offered too. All of these things combined made for a great meeting, (Ephesians 4:16).

Great Response. As brother Varner pointed out on the last night, one need not see visible responses in order to have responses. Hearts were touched, thoughts were stirred, fires for living the Christian life were relit. Our hope for heaven was renewed and our spirits were refreshed! These, and more, are self evident that the meeting spawned great response. The meeting may be over but its influence lives on.

All Glory To God For This Great Meeting!
