Reflections On A Spiritual Feast

Throughout our gospel meeting last week, brother Eddie Cooper fed us, and fed us well, from the reservoir of God's Holy Word. What a great blessing it was to sit at his feet and take in the rich lessons he imparted to us from the Bible. He reminded us all how relevant and practical the Bible is, even in the 21st century. Our minds were reinforced once more of how important our relationship is with God and how we ought to ever strive diligently to please Him in all things. Brother Eddie impressed upon our minds these three important points as I reflect upon his lessons:

The Things Of The World Are Unimportant - So often we get enamored with the things of this world because we live in this world. Not only do we live in this world, but so does everyone else, of whom the vast majority craves for the things this world has to offer. With so many — around us clinging to and longing for more of this world's things, its easy for us to become sidetracked and lose our focus. But more than once our brother reminded us of this truth, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever" (1 John 2:15-17).

The God Of This World Is Determined To Destroy Us - The apostle Peter declared: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Satan is not our ally or friend. He is our adversary and deadly enemy. His allurements are placed before us to entrap us. We must not be hoodwinked by his old, yet effective, bag of tricks, "...the lust of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life." During the meeting we were taught how vicious and cunning the Devil really is. Don't let Satan "...get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11). Let us decide to always "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). This is a choice we make.

Going To Heaven Is AH That Matters - Once we recognize that the things of this world are mundane trinkets, and that we have a formidable adversary that is out to dangle them in front of us so as to ensnare us, it should stir us to do whatever it takes to make it to Heaven. May no earthly bobble lure us away from that goal. May no person, no desire, or anything at all, keep us from veering off the narrow road and merging onto the broad way. Whatever sacrifice we have to make for Heaven’s attainment is worth it, (Matthew 5:29-30).

The meeting refreshed our spirits and fortified our faith. Let us now go forth being "doers of the word and not hearers only."
