The Power Of The Word

The inherent power of God’s Word is declared in such well known passages as Romans 1:16, and Hebrews 4:12 where Paul wrote: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth ; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.... For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Many other scriptures attest to the built-in power of God's Word, (e.g., Jn.5:39, lPet.l:23-25, Psalm 119, etc.).

But the inherent power existing in the Word itself, is manifested when it is put into practice. The Word does not just claim to possess power and then stop with the claim. It has practical power. When the Word is practiced its then that its claim of being powerful is proven. For example, if the following passages were practiced/obeyed, look at the world changing power that would be unleashed:

Matthew 7:12- This is known universally as "The Golden Rule." Imagine if everyone on earth would comply with this single verse and began practicing it tomorrow? Soon after, the need for locks, burglar bars, alarms, prisons, police forces, judges, lawyers, and courts would cease to exist. Divorce and child abuse would be a thing of the past. Crime of every sort would cease. No more drug cartels, murders, border fences, nuclear weapons, wars, not even an unkind word would ever be spoken again!

1 Corinthians 1:10- Just think what would result if this single verse was obeyed? It would be the death knell to church division coming from power struggles and personality differences. It would mean the end to factions, splinter groups, to the so-called "unity in diversity" nonsense. Ultimately it would be the death of denominationalism, inter-denominationalism and ecumenism!

Mark 16:15- Every member of the church preaching/teaching the gospel to everyone they know would turn the world upside down. Not everyone would obey the gospel, but every member would be doing what the Lord told them to do and the results would doubtless be astounding! We would not only reclaim our place as the fastest growing religious group, we’d probably be the largest religious group on earth. But whether or not that would be the case is immaterial. What matters is millions of souls would be saved and the Lord would be glorified!

Obedience to just one of these three verses show the power of the Word! The power is just not asserted, rather its proven, but only when its practiced! Therefore, it behooves us to be "...doers of the word, and not hearers only..." (Jas.1:22)!
