The Cause of Emptiness

One of the charges made against religion today is that it is empty. This has led many to reject Christianity and turn to various forms of religion. What is the cause for all of this? Is there something wrong with Christianity? Is the New Testament outdated? I deny such is the case. The cause is found elsewhere. Consider these six causes:

EMPTY PREACHING."and if Christ hath not been raised, then is our preaching vain..." (1Cor.15:14). The word "vain" means "empty, hollow." What makes preaching empty? Paul said that if Christ was not raised from the dead, then the preaching of the apostles was empty. This strikes at the heart of modernism. Modernism rejects all supernatural Bible teaching, viz., inspiration, the resurrection, miracles, the virgin conception and birth, et. al. Thus when the great fundamental truths of the Bible are dismissed, preaching is empty.

EMPTY FAITH.Empty preaching produces empty faith. Faith that is fruitless, without works, dead, futile. Read Hebrews 11 and see the reality of faith in action.

EMPTY WORSHIP.Empty preaching leaves an empty faith, an empty faith makes worship empty. Gimmicks such as hand clapping, dimming of lights, holding hands, dramas and Andy Griffith reruns won't make worship more meaningful. The place to begin with more meaningful worship is the pulpit and the content of the message.

EMPTY LIVES.(cf. Jas.2:20). A dead faith does not bring fullness to life. One hour a week sitting on a pew on Sunday morning, is the outcome of empty faith, and it stays empty the balance of the week. The root of empty lives is dead faith.

EMPTY RELIGION.(cf.. Jas.2:26). The common complaint, "I just don't get anything out of the services," is flawed. James says, religion that is all talk and no practice is empty. Full religion is found in the next verse.

EMPTY BIBLE STUDY.The trend today is to take the Bible out of Bible study. Many classes have evolved into "crisis management courses, financial planning seminars, sharing sessions and testimonials." Coffee and donuts take precedence over an examination of the Holy Scriptures.

The Bible is not empty, (Jas.4:5). Our talk may be empty but never the Scriptures. The cure for these causes of emptiness is a return to learning and applying the Word of God. Lets make sure our faith is working, active and obedient to the Word of God. Only this will make our lives full.
